Cryo-Electron Microscopy

Storrs
Center for Open Research Resources and Equipment

The Cryo-Electron Microscopy Facility provides sample preparation guidance and a Tundra TEM microscope to provide 3D reconstruction of proteins and macromolecular complexes at biologically relevant resolutions, supporting applications in structural biology, drug discovery, and translational research.

About the Director

Dr. Dandey works on cryo-EM sample preparation and automation. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Basel in 2015. Before joining UConn Health he was a scientist and deputy core director at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS/NIH), and earlier worked at the New York Structural Biology Center, including the Simons Electron Microscopy Center and the National Resource for Automated Molecular Microscopy. He has developed several widely used cryo-EM sample-preparation technologies, including Spotiton, self-wicking nanowire grids, which led to commercial Chameleon platform, and the open-source VitriFlex system (2025), along with methods that reduce air-water interface artifacts and support time-resolved cryo-EM. He leads the facility's VitriFlex and Tundra workflows, user training, and method development.
