The BIRC is a vibrant hub for multi-disciplinary research, including both basic science and translational research with implications for the classroom, clinic, and quality of life. The Center facilitates scientific discovery and theoretical innovation in cognitive neuroscience and other fields by providing access to state-of-the-art equipment and methods and technical and scientific training. It supports both brain and whole-body imaging and research across the life span and on a range of clinical and nonclinical populations. Additionally, the Center provides educational and research opportunities for UConn’s graduate and undergraduate students and disseminates scientific knowledge to the broader university community, relevant professional communities, and the general public.

Please note: BIRC does not directly schedule non-research appointments. Please contact UConn Health Radiology for any scheduling questions.

Where to go:

The Brain Imaging Research Core (BIRC) is located in the David C. Phillips Communication Sciences Building on the University of Connecticut-Storrs south campus. Please plan to arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment time. There is dedicated parking.pdf in the circular parking lot, but if there is not an open space we will provide you with a temporary parking pass. Please enter through the main entrance and follow the signs to the Brain Imaging Research Core.

What to bring:

Please a picture form of ID (driver’s license, government issued ID, passport.) If you were given a paper order for your MRI by your doctor, please bring that with you.

How to dress:

All patients need to change into provided clothing; personal clothing is not allowed in the scanner. Lockers are available to secure your belongings.

What to expect:

When you arrive at BIRC, you will be greeted by one of our staff members who will need to confirm your information using your name, date of birth, and picture ID. You will complete a metal screening form before you are brought into the MRI area. Please note: minors (under the age of 18) must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Once the technologist reviews your metal screening form, you will be brought into the scanner room for your examination. Our goal is to provide you with high quality images, and that can be accomplished only when you are able to lie perfectly still during the scans. Please let us know if you are uncomfortable before we begin the examination, and we will work with you to get you as comfortable as possible.

Important: BIRC staff cannot provide any medication for pain or anxiety. Please contact your doctor at least 48 hours before your scheduled appointment if you have any concerns about being able to tolerate the examination.

After your scan:

Your images will be reviewed by a radiologist, and a report will be sent to your ordering physician. The BIRC staff is unable to provide any results immediately after your examination.
